- Matthew Gates, 31, was arrested and charged with false representation of a licensed contractor, uttering a forged instrument and fraudulent use of a notary's signature after a five-month investigation by the Neptune Beach Building Department and police.

Police say city Building Official Don Ford received a request for a permit for two roof contracting jobs in the city from Gates in June. But upon further review, Gates, of the 100 block of Mill Court, Ponte Vedra Beach, was found not to have the proper license to conduct the work and police said he forged the signature of the potential customers on Sand Castle Way.

Police went to Gates' business, Gates Roofing Empire on Atlantic Boulevard, but found it had closed.

With the help of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, police found Gates in a relocated business in the 2200 block of St. Johns Bluff Road, where they arrested him Thursday.

Our roof was $20,000. They gave a great warranty butIt has 3 leaks, still not fixed, one of which is severe and rain pours in. Taken days off to meet them, they never show. They won't pick up the phone since they know it's us. Apparently they didn't even pay their workersSteer clear

Matthew Gates at Gates Roofing Empire is the most honest man that I have met. He did nothing but help me in everyway possible to make it possible to get a roof. Gates Roofing Empire had the best price of the 5 estimates that we received. Mr. Gates followed through from beginning to end with our roof, he did not collect any money until we were satisfied with the job, which was as soon as it was completed. The crew was clean and all debris were picked up. I have had no problem with my roof and I would recommend this company to anybody. Today, we have a different company of roofers on our house, fixing damage done by the failure of Gates to honor their warrany. It's costing us over two thousand dollars. Do not deal with this company! They have about 24 complaints with BBB. Before you do business with anyone, you should contact the BBB AND SEE WHAT EXPERIENCES PEOPLE HAVE HAD. Before you sign with a company, based on what you read in an online interview, go to the people who really know, at the BBB. Many complaints, or even a few unresolved ones are a RED FLAG. Do not assume that what you read in a review is true, either positively, or negatively, until you go to the BBB and check it out for yourself. There, you can also search for companies with few, or even NO bad complaints in the last few years. You can save thousands of dollars and years of worry, by doing just this one thing, before you sign anything. Another suggestioncheck out addresses, phone numbers, and get three estimates. I called 5 roofing companies to give me an estimate on fixing my 17 year old roof. Only 3 responded and Gates not only gave me the best price, but the best guarantee. His men were on time each day and cleaned up after they finished each day.

My friend 2 blocks over used a cheap company he found (they had no web site either) and paid for it.with nails in his wifes SUV tires not once but twice.and they couldn't stop the fireplace from leaking.

I would recommend Gates to anyone..I say get it done right the first time.
